Thrift Shop Joy!

Sooo very happy to find this!

THGGM bought me the Grandmother's book on the right for my birthday. I had pointed it out to him in a book store, and he remembered that I said I wanted it. And, I LOOOVE it.

I was a teensy bit upset that he bought it at the book store, but he assured me that he used his discount card AND had a coupon.

I found the "Moms" book at a thrift store this week. For a dollar.

The pictures are oh so very charming. I've been thumbing through both of these books this afternoon. Such a pleasant thing to do!

Seriously. We are all about babies over here.

Heidi

Found a very nice library copy of Heidi. Wow. With illustrations by Jessie Willcox Smith. I think it's time I read this again.

I've Been Wanting These!

Actually, I've been looking for old "Uncle Remus" books, but finding The Complete Tales was still a joy! And, the illustrations are lovely.

Since I collect all manner of Klutz books, I was happy to find two that I don't already have. Klutz books are so handy to have around when learning something new. My hope is that these books will get much use as the grandchildren grow.

Oh. And the Susan Branch "Baby Love" book? I've wanted it since it first came out. And since I know someone expecting a baby two months from today, I just may be giving it up for a good cause!

Fine Weekend Finds

Whew. It was a busy weekend, but I did manage to thrift shop. Found these five books. About the only one I have the energy to read tonight is the Cheerios book. I'm sure there are enough Cheerios scattered about that I needn't even open the pantry.

THGGM found two large wreaths which he has hanging on the carriage lights on either side of the garage door. I'd take a picture of those, but it is just too unbelievably cold out.

I LOVE This Book

And look! I only had to pay one dollar for it!

It does not bother me that it 'runs out' in the 1990's. It's the earlier stuff that interests me the most.

Last night, while reading Will Durant "The Story of Philosophy", I had a few questions about what was going on at the time of Spinoza. Soooo nice to just go to my Timetables book and find it all laid out for me right there.

Yes. I seriously LOVE this book.

If you don't have a copy do yourself an historical favor and buy one. Even if you have to pay full price. It's worth it.

I almost bought the Kitchen Table Bird Book at Barnes and Noble. It would have cost considerably more there.
The Needlework book has fabulous pictures and a macrame section - which made me wonder - whatever happened to macrame?
I also found a lot of music, for 10 and 25 cents.

Lately I've found TinTin to be fabulous bathroom reading.

It's impossible for me to pass up a great deal on a great copy of "A Child's Garden of Verses.
I love the illustrations in this copy. All for $1.20.

My On Line Memory

I found this great Tasha Tudor book for two dollars today.

Can't wait to sit down with it and enjoy every detail.

I also found a bag of green handled cookie cutters. Love those. They will look nice in the wooden bowl of red and green handled cookie cutters at Christmas time.

Really, truly, the main reason I keep this blog is so that I can look back through it and wonder.., 'Hey, where DID I put that?'

Books

One of my favorite kinds of children's books is alphabet books. Jonge is starting to ask a lot of questions about words and letters, and he LOVES to follow each word as I read it. Oh, and did you notice that this book has a "Simply Thrift" page? Even more delightful!

"Living with Folk Art" - I almost passed on this one, but then I thought what a good deal it is to find decorating books that never really go out of style. Folk Art, by it's very nature cannot go out of style. Can it? I think not. I spent most of Saturday evening thumbing through this.

Can't pass up a book by Philip Gulley. I'm already several chapters into this one and I'm feeling less depressed about life in general.

Philip Gulley and Christopher deVinck are such good writers about family life from a man's perspective.

I buy both of these authors every chance I get.

They "know things" and share it in ways that help you to understand life better.

Mill on the Floss

Tonight I went to half price book day at the thrift store.

I found five hardcover books that interested me, each for only 50 cents.

This one was the best. An embossed cover with a picture is ALWAYS a nice find. Fifty cents is ALWAYS a good price. And, this is a George Eliot book.

Oh, this made me SO happy.

Never Too Many Books

Last Saturday I found several great books! I'm presently reading "Mary Chesnut's Civil War" again. This particular book had more to it than the edition I read first. I'm enjoying it very much.

I also found several children's books and then these two hardcover music books. I've attempted to read them, but it would require more concentration than I'm capable of presently to make it all the way through. So, I am just admiring them as they lean against my piano.

Putting a Little Something Away for the Future

When my kids were growing up, I always wanted to buy them Klutz books.

I remember actually buying a few for gifts. Youngest Son learned to juggle, a skill that amazes me (and his nephew and niece) to this day.

I'm always on the look-out for them!

I believe I have twenty of them now.

They are kept in this thrifted picnic basket, awaiting the time when Jonge and Famke will (hopefully!) be as thrilled with them as I am.

Really, truly.

I still get a certain unexplainable joy that I can now purchase these books for under a dollar. Most of them I have only paid 29 cents for.

And while I'm here, picnic baskets and suitcases make fantastic storage.

Small Art

Books like this are not too difficult to find in thrift stores.

















I'm not sure why they are not snapped up quicker than they are! I love getting all those tiny pictures printed on such good quality paper! Great for decoupage, popping into a small frame, or even to use as classy art in a dollhouse or shadow box.

And look! It's Rainer Maria Rilke! I love him!

And for only 25 cents! Jonge is already a fan of finger prints (what kid isn't?) But lest you think I bought this for him, think again. This is mine, Mine, MINE!

Because I really like the birds. Yes. That's why.

Thrifting for Great Reads

I have finished reading my thrifted copy of "The Complete Adventures of the Borrowers". Apparently, I had only read one of the books, and seen the movie, as I could clearly picture Eddie Albert as a borrower.

Saturday we visited one thrift shop on the other side of town. THGGM was looking for a book at Baker Book House, hoping to find it in the used book section. He did, but not for cheap enough. SO, I suggested we try hitting the thrift store 'over there', and we did not find what HE was looking for.

Although, I did find MANY copies of books in the 'used book' department at the book store that were also at the thrift store but for at least $10 cheaper per copy.

If you are wondering, I did NOT buy them.

I only bought three small hardcover books, at three for a dollar. One was a Joan Wash Anglund, and two were those little gift books, one about tea and one of The Velveteen Rabbit.

I've put myself on a $5.00 weekly limit at thrift stores. I still have four dollars left over from last week.

Sadly, I feel as if I deserve a round of applause!

Simply a MUST HAVE

Have you seen this book? It is absolutely delightful! Somewhere, and I cannot remember where, I read about personalizing this book for a friend. So, I went out and bought one for a Valentine's Day gift and did just that. My friend (THGGM) liked it. Since then I have found several others. This copy I found today for 29 cents. Quite the savings off the full retale price.
